Energy Saving Kit for Schools.

Energy Saving Kit for Schools cover.A manual for school energy saving and greenhouse gas reduction project leaders.

By using the Energy Saving Kit (ESK) your school can reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse gas production by up to 30% each year. A considerable amount of energy can be saved, with big environmental and financial benefits for individual schools. Greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide, could be reduced by up to 20,000 tonnes each year. The lessons learnt in saving energy can bring spin-off savings and environmental benefits at home and even at workplaces beyond schools.

The ESK is a practical resource provided by Western Power’s energy and environmental education centre, World of Energy. It is designed to be used by your school’s Energy Management Team. As a result of working through the tasks outlined, the Team will develop the following:

  • An assessment of the school’s current energy consumption.
  • The school’s energy management policy.
  • A strategy for implementing the policy; and,
  • A presentation to show the results to the school council.

Saving Energy, Money and CO2

Saving, energy, money and CO2 cover.A science and technology teaching resource for primary and secondary schools.

We all demand a high level of comfort from the appliances that we use in our homes. In Western Australia nearly 30% of electricity and 5% of gas use is for domestic purposes. Electrical appliances such as air conditioners cause peak electricity generation loads. Our use of electricity is increasing and is having an effect on the environment in which we live.

The purpose of the Saving Energy, Money and CO2 teaching resource is to help students develop energy management strategies that will reduce electricity and gas consumption in their homes. It is about processes, attitudes and technology.

By saving energy we will achieve three worthwhile objectives. They are:

  1. Conserve our energy resources so that they last longer.
  2. Minimise the impact of energy use on the environment and help reduce the greenhouse effect and global warming; and,
  3. Save money.

In other words, Save Energy, Money and CO2.

Shock Proof Electrical Safety Education Kit for Schools.

Shock proof electrical safety education kit for schools cover. Each day, we use electricity to enhance our lifestyles. We use it for cooking, cleaning, heating and lighting our homes, as well as running industry, which manufactures goods for domestic use and export to other countries.

Electricity is clean, quiet and invisible. The fact that it is invisible means we often take it for granted and its inherent dangers are not always apparent.

Every year in Australia, electricity kills and seriously injures a considerable number of people. Most of these injuries occur through a lack of knowledge and understanding about electricity and its dangers.

The Shock Proof Electrical Safety Education Kit for Schools has been designed for use as a classroom resource primarily for high school teachers. However, it can just as easily be used by primary school teachers to reinforce the Shock Proof electrical safety presentations provided FREE by Western Power’s World of Energy.

Specifically written for Western Australian schools, the Kit is intended to be used to raise students’ awareness of electrical hazards and to assist them in understanding the following:

  • How to use electricity safely in the home.
  • The dangers associated with power lines and sub stations.
  • The effects of electrocution on the body; and,
  • Strategies for avoiding and dealing with electrical accidents.

As shown in the Shock Proof safety concepts diagram on page 7, the Kit is divided into three main sections. These are:

  • Part A: Using Electricity Safely in the Home.
  • Part B: Out and About.
  • Part C: Electrical Accidents.

Each part contains the following:

  • Teachers’ notes introducing each main section. These provide information on the section and suggested activities.
  • Overheads to emphasise main messages in each sub-section.
  • Activity sheets and assignments to consolidate safety messages for each sub-section.
  • A test covering knowledge content.

This program is provided FREE to all primary schools in the metropolitan area and major regional centres.

The Watchit and play safe comic book ‘The tales of Socket and the gang’ reinforces the following safety messages:

  • Be careful around electricity power poles and wires when you play!
  • If you see a dangerous situation tell an adult!
  • Know what to do in an electrical emergency!
  • Electricity and water do not mix!
  • Metal is a conductor of electricity and can be dangerous!
  • Stay away from electricity sub stations!
