Each year, many secondary students try to build Western Australia’s fastest, hottest solar model car. Students have participated in the annual Western Power Solar Model Car Challenge since 1992. The students purchase a 10 watt solar panel, as well as an instructional book and video, which encourage them to use their imaginations to design and race their own solar model cars.
Last year, 40 secondary schools entered the Challenge in Forrest Place, Perth. Over the years, the Western Australian winners have proven to be the best in the world dominating both the National and International Solar Model Car Challenges since 1992. First time entrant, Belridge Senior High School, was the line honours winner in the 2004 event, which was held in Perth (Murdoch University) for the first time. Christ Church Grammar School also won its fourth Australian-International Model Solar Car Challenge in 2004.
