- In 1790, Aloisio Galvani, an Italian professor of medicine, found that when the leg of a dead frog was touched by a metal knife which had been lying next to an electrical machine, the leg twitched violently.
- Galvani thought that the muscles of the frog must contain electricity, but another Italian scientist, Alessando Volta, solved the mystery of the jerking leg.
