The response in Western Australia:

western australia

In November 2001, the State Government established the Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO). Since then, SEDO has been actively promoting the greater use of renewable energy and increased energy efficiency by all Western Australians. As part of the SEDO program, the Energy Smart Government initiative was released in June 2002. The Energy Smart initiative includes a wide range of energy-savings practices for State Government agencies as well as Western Australian businesses and homes.

Through the Energy Smart initiative, the State Government plans to reduce its stationery energy use (or non-transport energy use) by 12 per cent from 2001/2002 to 2006/2007. The State Government agencies are rapidly advancing to meet this target. Since 2002, they have already decreased their energy consumption by about 60 million kWh of energy, which is enough to run more than 11,000 households.

To further improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Western Australian Greenhouse Strategy was released in September 2002. The Greenhouse Strategy commits the Western Australian Government to purchasing five per cent of its electricity from cost-effective, renewable energy sources by 2006-2007.

Like the rest of Australia, one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Western Australia is electricity generation. In 2005/06, direct greenhouse gases from electricity produced by Verve Energy, the State’s largest electricity generation company, was 11.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Verve Energy is a member of the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Challenge Plus program and has determined that the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gases from its electricity production are through:

  • Use of more greenhouse friendly fuels to generate electricity;
  • Use of more efficient generation technologies; and
  • Use of renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels for electricity generation.
