The facts about Biomass Energy

‘Earth Friendly’ electricity in Western Australia:

Synergy has developed renewable energy products for customers interested in environmental protection. For example, Western Australians can purchase the “Earth Friendly” energy product, which is certified by the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO). Earth Friendly electricity is generated in the traditional way, but the emissions created in its production are counter-balanced by greenhouse gas reduction programs. When customers pay for Earth Friendly electricity, Synergy will make a financial contribution to certified biomass projects that are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These biomass projects are part of the AGO Greenhouse Friendly Program and they include:

Methane flaring

Extracting and burning methane so that it does not reach the atmosphere. Methane gas can be collected by allowing plant and animal wastes to rot in a digester. A digester is a large sealed container. As the waste material decomposes, then gas is released and this gas can be used for lighting, cooking and heating.

Methane flaring is where excess methane is burnt before it can add to the Earth's greenhouse gases.

Landfill diversion

Reducing the amount of material in the landfill that could produce methane.

Fuel substitution

Converting from coal or oil to gas so that fewer greenhouse gas emissions are created.

Sequestration

Having permanent tree plantations to absorb and store carbon dioxide.
