- On 1 October, the SEC of WA acquires the Fremantle Gas and Coke Company.
1987
- The installed generating capacity for the South West Interconnected System is now 2,101MW.
- Six, 60kW Westwind turbines are installed by the SEC of WA at Salmon Bay, Esperance.

1988
- In April, the first LNG tanker "Northwest Sanderling" is launched in Japan.

- The SEC of WA changes its logo name to SECWA.

- In July, the 1,465kW Denham Power Station is commissioned.


- In September, the voltage changeover of domestic electricity supplies from 50 volts to 240 volts is completed.
1989
- In February, site works commence on Pinjar Gas Turbine Power Station.


- On 28 July, the first cargo of LNG for the Japanese market leaves the Burrup Peninsula.

- On 1 December, the Mungarra Gas Turbine Power Station is commissioned with 2 x 36MW units.

1990
- Muja Power Station celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary.
- On 22 November, the Minister for Mines, Fuel and Energy, the Hon. Carr MLA, officially opens the Pinjar Gas Turbine Power Station.
1991
- In February, North Rankin A drilled the longest well in history from an offshore gas/oil platform. It was 6,180 metres with a horizontal reach of 50,000 metres.

1992
- On 4 December, SECWA agrees to buy electricity from Landfill Gas Development Pty Ltd, Western Australia’s first private power station using landfill gas. The 2MW power station is located at the Redhill landfill site.

1993
- In October, the first commercial wind farm in Australia is commissioned. Located at Ten Mile Lagoon, Esperance, the nine 225kW Vestas wind turbines are connected to Esperance's power station via a 33kV power line.
