1913

  • The Mayor, Mr G. A. Kempton, switches on the electricity supply in Geraldton in August.

  • City of Perth Electricity and Gas Department formed.

  • Design proposals are being developed for a new gas works to be constructed on Trafalgar Road, East Perth.

  • In September construction commences on the East Perth Power Station foundations.  The Premier, Mr Scadden, advises Parliament that the Power Station will generate 12 megawatts (MW) of electricity and will be enlarged to 16MW, which will be sufficient generating capacity to supply electricity for the next 25 years.

The East Perth Power Station has its foundations laid.

  • Charles Merz’s recommendation for 50 cycle electricity is disregarded and 40 cycle generating plant is ordered from the United Kingdom.

1914

  • The last pile for the East Perth Power foundations is driven on 4 April. Concreting commences on 21 April and construction of steelwork commences on 22 May.

More foundations are laid for the East Perth power Station.

  • A contract is let to Messrs. Clayton, Son & Co. Ltd of Leeds, England for the construction of a 750,000 cubic feet spiral-guided gasholder in Trafalgar Road, East Perth.

1915

  • The transmission line is extended from the East Perth Power Station to Midland while local Midland generation ceases.

City of Perth Electricity and Gas Department workers use an electric truck to carry transmission power poles.

  • Construction of the Trafalgar Road gas holder is completed and connected to the Moore Street Gas Works. It is known as No.1 City Holder.

1916

  • On 3 December, the first 4 megawatt (MW) generating unit at East Perth Power Station is commissioned.

  • The City of Perth Electricity and Gas Department continues the replacement of gas street lights with electricity.

Plans for a new design of street lights to use electricity instead of gas.


1917

  • In March, the second and third turbo alternators (8MW) begin operating at the East Perth Power Station.

No2 and 3 turbo alternators are commissioned at East Perth Power Station.

  • The Perth Electric Tramways Power Station is closed.

1919

  • Electricity is distributed from the East Perth Power Station to the Cockburn area via the Fremantle Power Station.


1920

  • The Subiaco Power Station closes and the Subiaco Council decides to purchase alternating current from the City of Perth Electricity and Gas Department.

  • On 6 March, the Mayor, Mr Day, opens the new Albany Power Station.

1921

  • In October, the contract is let for the construction of the East Perth Gas Works. It is to be located on the banks of the Swan River in Trafalgar Road, east Perth.

1922

  • The new Geraldton Power Station commences generating direct current.

  • In December, the No. 4 generating unit of 7.5 MW is commissioned at East Perth Power Station. This increases the generating capacity to 19.5 MW.

1923

  • The last gaslights in Perth, located on the Horseshoe Bridge, are removed and replaced with electric lights.

1924

  • The Claremont Power Station ceases generation and purchases bulk electricity from the East Perth Power Station through the City of Perth Electricity and Gas Department.

  • On Wednesday 9 April, His Excellency Sir F. Newdegate officially opens the East Perth Gas Works.
